Designing a really top-end sports car is one of the greatest challenges in car design. It is where technical precision and performance are stretched to the very limits of feasibility. In the new Audi R8 Coupé, our designers and developers have succeeded in creating a car which embodies our striving for automotive perfection and unusual design. The design of the Audi R8 Coupé makes a clear statement. Muscular, clearly structured side lines emphasise its origin – in motor racing. Its exciting stylistic line with the characteristic sideblades makes a promise – powerful, irresistible dynamics –, which the car honours convincingly.
Front
The trademark four rings are not in their usual position in the grille, they are above it on the bonnet. This makes the front end look even lower and even closer to the road. The two wide air inlets flank the sportily slim Audi Singleframe. They are an important design element but also guarantee sufficient cool air is supplied to both the high-performance engine and the brakes of course.
The LED headlights
The new headlight design makes the Audi R8 easily recognisable – by day or night. This is mainly due to the characteristic appearance of the daytime running light strip which surrounds and emphasises the apparently floating dipped beam lens. The 6 LED arrays in the reflector chambers shine together with the spotlight to illuminate the road evenly with the bright, pleasant light colour typical of LED lights. The indicator is integrated in the upper daytime running light as a clearly defined line. In addition, the Audi R8 now has a static turning light which, depending on the specified steering angle, is activated automatically at speeds of up to about 70 km/h or at speeds of up to 40 km/h with the indicator switched on to illuminate the course of the road more brightly.
The LED rear lights
In addition to the headlights, the rear lights also use LED technology. Here, an LED tail light strip surrounds the newly designed interior of the light unit. This contains the brake light comprising 24 LEDs and the reversing light which also uses LED technology. The indicator comprises 30 LEDs and is located at the lower edge of the rear lights, where it makes dynamic direction indication possible for the first time. The intended change in direction is indicated by the LEDs in 7 switched units, drawing more attention from following vehicles.
V8 or V10 mid-engine with quattro® permanent all-wheel drive
The mid-engine presents itself confidently beneath the rear window, like a work of art in a large showcase. When the vehicle is at a standstill, the optional engine compartment lighting can put the engine on impressive display.
Sideblades
The sideblades are characteristic for the side view. As well as fulfilling their function of routing intake and cooling air to the engine, they are a characteristic design element. On the V10 the sideblades are flared, on the V10 plus they are made of carbon to emphasise the lightweight character.
Rear spoiler
The electrically extendable rear spoiler guarantees additional downforce. Either through speed-dependent automatic control or manual push-button in the cockpit.
Audi Space Frame ASF®
The space frame body is the perfect basis for outstanding driving dynamics and agile handling with low energy consumption. The Audi Space Frame ASF® consists primarily of enclosed aluminium profiles and large, multifunctional castings. In the case of the Audi R8, potential savings afforded by ASF compared with a conventional steel design amount to 120 kg.
FSI® engine
With FSI® technology, fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber. This achieves more effective cylinder filling and compression ratios than on engines with conventional injection. The result is lower fuel consumption yet equally good performance.
S tronic®
The S tronic transmission combines the low fuel consumption of a manual transmission with the benefits of an automatic. The control ensures fast and consumption-reducing gear shifting in automatic mode. The very large transmission-ratio spread of the S tronic allows the last gears to be used at very low engine speeds.
LED technology
The LEDs used in daytime running lights are made to last the lifetime of the vehicle and the saving in power consumption that they offer is as much as half compared with conventional bulbs.
